Dr Bhawna Bali is an alumnus of the Panjab University, Chandigarh, from where she had her academic training in the discipline of Urban Geography, with an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in the subject. Her teaching experience is quite diverse including urban studies, tourism and geography. At TERI SAS, she teaches core subjects of Urban Development Policies and Programmes, Theories of Urbanisation, City and Regional Planning and Management and Research Methodology in the MTech Urban Development Management (UDM) programme. She coordinates the MTech UDM student internships with Municipal Corporations, Smart Cities Special Purpose Vehicles and parastatals.

Being a geographer, her forte is in field work-based research and mostly involving qualitative methods. Her research interests are in processes of urbanization, migration, urban governance and policies. She is involved in national and international funded research projects in the domain of urban development in India. She worked on sustainable urban development, heritage cities and basic services provision in peri-urban areas under the HUDCO Chair at TERI SAS. She did the AMRUT Reforms Assessment for select cities of Rajasthan for NIUA. She is currently involved in ICSSR funded major project on peri-urbanization and land acquisitions and HUC-ICIMOD funded project on gender and urban planning.

In addition to teaching and research engagements, she is involved in capacity building training programmes for Urban Local Body officials, Smart City SPVs and other stakeholders as part of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ CBUD activities; seminars on issues of sustainable urban development, qualitative research methods and research supervision skills.
