Dr. Shovon Mandal has made substantial contributions to the field of algal biotechnology. He received his PhD from the IIT Kharagpur, where he worked on algal physiology and biodiesel production. Prior to joining to the TERI, Mandal held Associate Research Scientist Position at New Mexico Consortium (Los Alamos National Laboratory) and postdoctoral researcher positions at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the University of Michigan, and the University of California San Diego, USA. During his research tenure in the US, he demonstrated how fundamental principles of ecology can be used in algal biofuel production. Currently, his research group aims to develop beneficial algal-microbial interactions to increase cultivation yield using the ecological engineering approach. Dr. Mandal is developing tools for early detection technology of biotic and abiotic stress in algae. His research also focuses on exploiting algal biotechnological processes to produce high, medium, and low-value products. He uses multivariate statistics with R as an analytical tool in his research. His research helps to generate an environmentally sustainable route for improving algal productivity and biotechnological process.
